Building Partnerships for Ocean Health in Southern California
On May 8, 2015 the newly formed UCI OCEANS initiative kicked off with a day-long conference for university and community members entitled Building Partnerships for Ocean Health in Southern California. The conference marked the launch of UCI OCEANS as one of the campus’s newest multidisciplinary academic initiatives within the Office of Academic Initiatives. The conference featured a diverse range of speakers from the departments of Earth System Science, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Anthropology, and Planning, Policy, and Design. FloodRISE PI Brett Sanders and Co-PI David Feldman each presented on different aspects of project research, while Co-PI Abby Reyes facilitated an afternoon breakout session focused on strengthening shared goals for collaboration in the region. Building Partnerships for Ocean Health in Southern California is a first step for UCI OCEANS toward uniting the diverse marine-related research activities across the UCI campus with the expansive ongoing community interests and pursuits along Southern California’s coasts.
